Prof. Dr. Carsten Binnig is part of the Department of Computer Science at the TU Darmstadt in Darmstadt, Germany. He conducts research in several areas of databases and data management in connection with artificial intelligence (AI). His focus is on systems for AI and AI for systems.

My research currently focuses on the design of distributed and parallel data management systems for the next generation of data center and enterprise cluster hardware. For example, high-speed RDMA-enabled networks such as InfiniBand FDR/EDR have been a very expensive technology used only in high-performance computing (HPC) clusters. However, InfiniBand has recently become cost-effective with Ethernet and is becoming an interesting alternative for future data centers and enterprise clusters. Our initial results from building an InfiniBand-optimized system called I-Store show that this trend towards high-speed networks is enabling a new range of distributed data management systems, leading to significant performance improvements over existing systems for both analytical and transactional workloads.
